| Powerstar AE115 sputters/works sometimes. |
|
|
Hi I was wondering why my Powerstar AE115 makes a popping noise as if it were heating air bubbles or boilig the water? One element does this (the one closest to the outlet) and the element closest to the inlet barely heats up. Plus, there is a small leak in the pipe system about 20ft. ahead of the water heater. The heater sounds like it's sputtering and in turn the shower sputters. I think there may be some kind of block in the line between the wter heater and the shower head. Any ideas? Thanks, Paul |

Hi Paul, Thanks for your question. A popping noise on the inside of one of the heating tanks may be an indication of boiling due to scale buildup. Also it is not unusual for the first tank to not feel like it is heating up at all. At this point, I would give our technicians a call at 1-866-330-2729 and they can get you on the right track to fixing the unit. Please call from the unit with a Volt/Ohmmeter. A thermometer might come in handy as well. Thorsten Bosch Water Heating |

Thanx for the advice, and here's the followup. We have installed new plumbing everywhere useing PEX tubing. Good stuff. We have added a sediment filter and new fixtures like the sinks and shower. We have done this because of dirt and sediment buildup that has reduced our water press. and caused what we thought to be overheating in the AE115 unit. The dirt buildup that prompted us to re-plumb was caused by our town's municipal utilities digging up part of the line for whatever reason late last year. We purged our lines and thought we got all of the dirt and rock out of the line. Since the AE115 unit is not even a year old yet, could there be fine particles instead of scale buildup in the unit? It still overheats the 2nd element and pops the thermal cutout. The 1st element usually stays pretty cold. Could the winter temp. of the incoming water cause the unit to overheat? It still makes the sputtering sound of boiling water, but press. is fine. Thanx again! (considering going up to AE125 maybe it will work better) PaulY |

Oh yah one more thing. Water p***ing through unit is okay warm almost hot.It only gets very hot (popping thermal cutout) after water has been turned off for 30sec. or more (usually longer up to 5min.) I have opened the PEX manifold to let some steam escape from the outlet. I don't get it.. PaulY |

If the second module continues to blow the overheat, there is defintely a problem. I would suspect that one of the elements in that module is staying on either because the element is shorted out to the outside of the can, or the control unit is inadvertantly not shutting the element down. Check the resistance of the elements per the bulletin "Light on water not hot" bulletin in the Library (TWH-E2-02). That will help you determine whether or not it is the element or the control board. If you need to give us a call, Thursday Mornings are usually the best. Thorsten Bosch Water Heating |
